A good breeder will know the relative drives of each of their pups and select yours accordingly. Golden retrievers generally aren't prey driven, but my sister had one who would go after every cat it laid eyes upon. They can match you with the appropriate puppy. If you need a dog with low prey drive, it is best to go through a breeder. It doesn't sound like you have the time resources needed for management should it pop up, small children are labor intensive! :) I've known a cairn terrier who was timid and soft and a St Bernard with a high prey drive. It's hard to know how much any individual (particularly when mixed) will differ from the norm. ![]() Prey drive isn't something you can train out of a dog but it can be managed. Even if it expressed only by chasing, this is a major stressor on animals and can cause all sorts of problems. ![]() These breeds tend to be prey-driven and not generally suitable around livestock, including chickens. I'd say this dog likely has a good amount of AmStaff or APBT with some other stuff thrown into the mix, with bully breeds being the majority. I can see why you'd want a dog with lower prey drive with that household mix. I’m against irresponsible people in general BUT pitbulls do possess a lot of strength and power more than a terrier for example, so it’s just that added fact. I’m against the irresponsible people who own pit bulls. So it’s just that people make pitbulls look bad. I have 2 pitbulls: one bully and one mix probably part staffy. Something about the way they think of pitbulls is off putting.īut to add: I’m actually not really a fan of pitbulls - not really against the breed specifically, but too many irresponsible people have pitbulls because they think it’s ‘cool’ and have absolutely no idea what training is or what strengths their dog possesses and thus. Especially if all they want is a casual family pet.Īlso to add: after reading OP’s responses in general I feel like they aren’t equipped to handle this dog in case it ‘is part pitbull’. If the dog hasn’t shown any other concerning signs I don’t see a problem. this goes for literally all breeds thoughīut I mean, I’m not sure if this dog has pitbull, so what you’re saying is true too that OP is focusing on the wrong things. So that doesn’t help poorly bred pitbulls’ cases. ![]() I do believe breed traits matter, and well pitbulls were bred for a specific reason, and with so many BYB’s / irresponsible people breeding/ mills theres so much bad genetic pools out there…. Not even giving this beautiful little baby a chance.Īlso true. Imagine giving up this pup just because someone said it looks like a pitbull. Your pup could very well have zero pitbull in them. We got a DNA test and it turns out they have zero pitbull in them. We adopted a medium hair pure black puppy from the USA knowing fully that she may be part pitbull, many of her siblings looked part pitbull, and we have a ban on bully breeds here. They're labelling this pup as a lab mix for the same reason of why you're now saying this dog isn't for you, the stigma against pitbulls and any dog that even remotely looks like one is insanely unrealistic and puts so many dogs at risk of life at a shelter or euthanized. I've met so many pitbulls and none of them have ever been aggressive to kids. If you adopt a shelter mutt you must acknowledge that any dog no matter the size, shape, colour, or fur might have pitbull in them. Then find a dog from a responsible breeder. And this is just purely MY opinion from what I’ve kind of gathered and realized in my own experience and reading about it as well. You’re not finding no Great Dane or Beagle or golden retriever in shelters in those places. Areas that don’t have a lot of resources ARE full of pitbull mixes. If a person did^ that to a yorkie… or to… a pug. The problem: irresponsible people who know nothing about dogs who get pitbulls and do no training with the dogs may even mistreat them unknowingly and also poor genetics and then the dog grows up to be reactive with behavioral issues: that make them dangerous because they do have the capability of doing a LOT of harm. not saying all pitbulls attack, not making any blanket statement ![]() However if someone irresponsible had a pitbull and it came to attack me, well there is a lot more at risk. Of course I hate all irresponsible pet owners, but if someone is irresponsible with their chihuahua or dachshund, it’s not putting me or my dog at much risk… that’s really what it boils down to. I’m not blaming pitbulls - but the irresponsible people who own dogs in general. You won’t be seeing Dobermans filling up shelters - these are rare-er breeds. Areas where there may not be a lot of resources.
